Asia Finance:
Opportunities for Treasury and Finance Professionals
AFP is opening an office in Singapore, led by Regional Director, APAC, Himashi Soriano. The goal is for Soriano and her team to help organizations in the Asia-Pacific region transform the way they engage and train their finance and treasury staff.
Treasury and finance may vary widely by nation and region. But, in a recent interview, Soriano said she is learning that treasury and finance professionals all over the world share common challenges.
Ira Apfel: Why is AFP opening an office in Singapore?
Himashi Soriano: To help finance professionals in Asia reach their greatest career potential. We want to help team leaders lead better and more effective teams and individuals be the best they can be in their career.
Nothing of what I have learned or hearing regarding skills gaps is any different than what companies are challenged with in North America.
Why is the skills gap such a challenge for finance leaders?
With the boom of big data, most finance departments are now competing with other teams that have their own data scientists or experts. The question I always ask, does your team have the knowledge and skills to analyze and interpret data to help the company make better business decisions.
How important is professional development for management?
The level of sophistication of fintech and payments. Whether it’s a universal QR code or a much higher usage of mobile wallet payments, consumers and businesses in Asia Pacific are years ahead of their North American counterparts. For treasury and finance professionals this means they are under even greater pressure to keep up with technological change.
What has surprised you so far about finance in Asia?
At AFP, we teach practitioners how to be better at Excel and data analytics as well as how to better manage treasury, payments and FX. We can even certify professionals with our Certified Treasury Professional and Certified Corporate Financial Planning & Analysis accreditations that are accepted and embraced around the world. And we can improve skills and knowledge of blockchain, artificial intelligence and machine learning.
How does AFP fit into the picture?

In Asia Pacific and in North America, treasury and finance professionals face a major skills gap—particularly when it comes to digital finance skills such as data analysis and data visualization, technical skills such as forecasting and cash management, and “soft skills” like visual storytelling. We think we can help close that gap.

Managers are busier than ever, the skills gap for their team is widening, and they are not quite sure how to address the problem. On top of all this, the governments of Singapore and Hong Kong are mandating more training and professionalization for treasury and finance professionals.
Plus, fintech is sparking innovation and changing the way we work. Automation is replacing mundane job tasks, which gives finance professionals room to be more strategic and valuable. Are they up the task?
